Here are some 'man cakes' that we've done recently. These are always more of a challenge for us, but we so enjoy the opportunity to do something a little different for our male clients. Below are cakes for a trout fisher, songwriter, baseball enthusiast, train spotter and........a pirate arrrrrrrrr.

Lucky Koi - The Dragon Restaurant, Burlington
This cake was designed for a small wedding. The bride brought us a picture of a Chinese dish for us to hand paint the koi fish from. This was one of the most difficult projects we've had in a long time. Hand painting on cakes is one thing....copying an already complex piece of artwork is quite another! We were given the colours red, orange and gold to work with. First I cut two fish shapes from white chocolate to overlay the fish shape onto the cake, to give some texture and a less flat finish. I polished the white chocolate to give it a high sheen before painting with edible food colours in the same way as the dish was painted. I then painted gold details on the fish to bring out their scale pattern and to give a rich gold tone.
Pink velvet cake with raspberry buttercream for the cake and red velvet cake with vanilla buttercream for the matching cupcakes. In Chinese culture red and gold symbolize good luck. We added white chocolate lotus blossoms dusted with a little pink edible colour.

Gone Fishing
Men's cakes are always so difficult in comparison to women's cakes but here was a nice compromise....a fishing cake with little fishes all over it!

Bonnie Gordon School 2010 Cake Show
I thought you'd like to see our other entry into the cake exhibition last weekend. This cake was designed and created by Louise Howling, our creative young designer.
It's a shame that you can't see all the way around this cake the hand painted koi carp painted on the cake were beautiful and the Chinese screen on the top of the cake was so intricate and pretty.
The gold branches were made from modelling chocolate and had fine branches in a very oriental stance.
The sugar phalanopsis orchids were so pretty.
Well done Louise!
