Keeping Busy!

A recent wedding cake for a sweet couple delivered to Liuna Station with Peggy, my intern who came all the way from the South of France to see how we make things at Let Them Eat Cakes.

This cake was created using antique poetry and picture frames as a theme and was all white and gold with a hint of silver (as was the decoration at the station).  A rococo theme is always opulent and stunning and we were delighted to be able to work together on this creation which took hours of hand painted 24k gold and silver dust on to sugar as well as sugar flowers and other detailed work.

Keep your eyes on these pages for more stunning cakes over the summer, we certainly have been lucky to work with such creative brides and amazing new colour schemes as the year has progressed.  We are so busy that it's hard to keep up with all the postings on the blog, but feel free to join our facebook page for more reviews, pictures and wedding ideas.

A Personal Favourite

Five years ago I had the pleasure of making a cake for a wonderful couple who met in Bermuda.  It was a blue hexagonal cake covered in shells and coral.  I also made their fifth anniversary cake.  This time I was asked to make a very special wedding cake for their nice who was getting married in Cambridge.  Happily Ever After was their theme and their colour scheme pinks and ivories.  We took the `banner`effect from their invitation and created this cake which had a scrolly detail just like the invitation also.

Marie Antoinette's Monogram - Queen's Landing, Niagara on the Lake

The bride and grooms initials were M and A so we used Marie Antoinettes initials as their monogram for this very royal ivory and gold cake for the Queen's Landing in Niagara on the Lake.  Unfortunately it was so dark in the banquet hall we couldn't get a very good picture of the cake :(

Antique Style Cakes

We have made the vintage/antique style of cake our 'signature' using a special technique that we're keeping secret....sssshhh.
Here we have a small 4" round cake with white flowers and white decorations but have used gold as an accent to make this look like a vintage piece.

Bridal Shower Cake - The Dress

The bride saw our 'princess dress' cake and wanted us to make a similar cake but using her actual wedding dress picture, which of course we were happy to do.
This was lots of fun to create, though took quite a few hours.

The bride requested a little bit of purple and a little bit of green as an accent colour to this all ivory cake.

All In The Details - Ancaster Old Mill

To match the brides dress and the style of the bridesmaids dresses this all white cake with purple blackberry cake inside was chosen.  We added a fabric style sugar flower with a vintage brooch in the middle.

Fascinating Cake

For a bridal shower our client asked us for a fascinator cake, something that we'd never done before.  It was great fun trying to make a large fascinating display on the side of this cake, with bling, sugar flowers and feathers.
This fun cake was lemon cake with raspberry filling.

Baptism Cake

Here's a take that we did for a wedding cake a few months ago, this time with a blingy brooch keepsake right in the middle.  A modern take on a traditional occasion.

The d'Oro Wedding Anniversary

Golden wedding anniversaries are very special.  Even more so when the couple celebrating are family members.  My husband's parents celebrated their 50 years together with a beautiful ceremony to renew their vows and a dinner with family and friends....and a cake, of course!

Billow Weave

And now for something a little different that was the hit of the recent Hamilton bridal show our new billow weave technique which we've just learned how to do and expect to see a lot of over the coming year.

These little puffs of sugar look like fabric and are dotted with more sugar in the form of golden jewels which are also completely edible.

Topped with a sugar bow and a sugar rose and leaves, so romantic!

Gold Elegance - Burlington Golf and Country Club

Gold, ivory, cream, bling......screams elegance and sophistication.

This cake was antiqued using gold dust prior to being decorated with a white damask finish and huge bows into which we nestled diamond brooches.
To give some idea of the dimensions, the brooches were 4" across!

Purple and Ivory

This interesting little cake was fun to do.  I love antiquing cakes to make them look vintage Victorian.  This cake was decorated with large silk blooms that the bride chose, this created a very moody cake with lots of elegance and whilst it was a fairly small cake it had lots of presence.

Vintage Coral - Paletta Mansion, Burlington

A perfect coral tone for this vintage French romance styled wedding at Paletta Mansion in Burlington.
The bride had created the invitations using paper punches for the lace and rubber stamps for the initials.  We used the same cutters and stamps but with edible mediums (sugar paste and gold dust) instead to replicate the initials on the cake.  The roses that cascaded down the sides of the cake were made of chocolate.

Envelope King - Tamahac Club, Ancaster

Sometimes it's difficult to make a cake for a man, especially one who's favourite colour is black and who doesn't play sports and who is retired.  The theme of the birthday dinner was ivory and gold and I found out that 'Chip' was retired from the envelope business....hence the envelope on the top.
We antiqued the ivory of the cake with gold dust and added a few little embellishments and this became a very formal looking, guy kind of cake!

White Simplicity - Ancaster Old Mill

A simple white wedding cake, so elegant with pure lines and the right amount of pretty.

Romance and Pearls - Ancaster Old Mill

A beautiful wedding cake featuring beautiful cascading pearls as well as a quilted pattern all over the cake.  Deep red hand made roses with sage green leaves provided a softness from the dark petals.

Red velvet cake.

Persian Wedding - St Lawrence Hall, Toronto

Following from our recent post all about the making of this cake, here is the finished cake set up at St Lawrence Hall.
This was one of the occasions when I not only got to make the cake, but also attend the wedding.  And what a wedding it was!  For anyone who has never attended a Persian wedding, you should really put it on your bucket list, my husband and I would certainly do it again in a heartbeat.  If you've gone to one of those weddings with music blasting and no one on the dance floor, then this would be a refreshing change for you!  Everyone (and I mean everyone) dances at a Persian wedding.  It starts before dinner when the emcee invites all the guests out to talk anyone who is in any doubt about the protocol, how it's done.  "Hands in the air for the men, turn them from side to side" then he explains "For the ladies, hands in the air but turn the wrists around and under from time to time".  Then the music, they make it so that no one can sit still!  Anyway, I'll try and post a video at some point to share the experience with you.
The ceremony is very special and there are lots of rituals and presented items that are representative of important things in the couple's life.  We were asked to make cookies for the presentation table which we were of course also delighted to do.  These fuchsia coloured cookies had a gold rose in the middle of each one.

Copy Cat!

We are sometimes asked to copy a cake found in a magazine. Sometimes, as in the case of this particular design it's lots of fun, challenging and a most definite learning curve.  This cake was designed by New York designer Ron Ben Israel (who designed Carrie's wedding cake in Sex In The City) and was featured in a Martha Stewart Weddings magazine (pictured below, right).
When Ellen came to see me and asked me to replicate this cake I was sincerely honoured to do so.  This design matched perfectly Ellen's theme and colour scheme of ivory and white.
I was delighted to receive an e-mail from Ellen on Sunday morning:
"Hi Lynne,

This is just a quick informal note to say thank you sooooooo much for the cake.  It was absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!  You did an amazing job - we both loved it.  There were many, many compliments on it, both about how it looked and tasted!!  I am so glad you were able to do it and re-create the design.  It was perfect!!!
Thank you so much,       Ellen"

The pleasure was all ours!
