Metallic Gold Cakes
SEPTEMBER 6, 2013
The gold metallic effect is very easily created. There is a wonderful array of edible gold sprays on the market by all the leading brands – Rainbow Dust, PME, Sugar Flair, Squires, Wilton, Dinkydoodle, to name but a few. The metallic gold sprays even come in a choice of light gold and dark gold in some of the brands.
Bear in mind, when spraying your cake, the colour of the fondant or buttercream underneath. For example, a white iced cake will take much more spray to build up a strong gold sheen than a caramel or beige tinted icing, so it might be worth experimenting with different colour icings before you start our gold wedding or 50th anniversary cake.
Aside from spraying your cake gold, there is also the option of using gold paint applied with a sponge to give a “rubbed gold” effect. Spraying gives a very even finish but gold paint applied with a sponge to a fondant-covered cake gives elegant an ”antiqued” finish.
Our fabulous examples above showcase the versatility of the gold as a wedding theme – it works with virtually every colour palette, but looks super chic with soft pink in the exquisite examples by Madisons on Main (above left) and from Pinterest (above right).
But if you really want to up the pizzazz, then why not go for gold leaf! It’s so luxurious and never fails to impress as our two stunning examples show -the cake below left is fromWedLuxe, while the cake on the right is by the renowned Australian cake designer, Faye Cahill.
Gold leaf would make a particularly special touch for a 50th anniversary cake. It can, however, be tricky to apply but you’ll find a tutorial here (how to apply gold leaf to a cake) to guide you.

Golden Cake - Ancaster Old Mill
Hi Lynne,
Joel and I wanted to thank you for the absolutely beautiful and tasty cake
you created for us. The level of detail and time you put into it certainly
showed and we truly appreciate it! The flavor was a hit with our guests and we
will cherish looking at the beautiful pictures of the cake for years to come.
You are a true artist!
Best wishes,
Veronika & Joel Costa

The d'Oro Wedding Anniversary
Golden wedding anniversaries are very special. Even more so when the couple celebrating are family members. My husband's parents celebrated their 50 years together with a beautiful ceremony to renew their vows and a dinner with family and friends....and a cake, of course!

Little Purple Wedding Cake
This was another of our four purple cakes this week. A bridesmaid called to ask if it was too late to order a wedding cake for Saturday (this was Wednesday).
The client said that the colours were purple, gold and white and since we were already working with these colours we were able to do this cake at short notice.
The cake inside was purple velvet. It's a pity that the picture has not captured the depth and warmth of the purple.

Golden Wedding Anniversary - Winona Vine Estates
And now for something quite different...a golden wedding anniversary cake with a little more unusual style....wedding pictures were added all around the cake as well as some old family photos to make a 'memory collage' for the happy couple. I'm sure after 50 years there were many more photographs than we could fit on this cake.We added gold sugar flowers and antiqued the whole cake with 24k gold dust...everything shimmered as you can see here.
The only thing that is not edible here is the number 50 on the top!

Beautiful Birthday Cake
Once in a while I'm lucky enough to get asked to create a cake exactly how I want to do it.
The resulting cakes are always my favourite as they reflect my taste and the way I like to create.
This cake was for a Gowlings Lawyer who wanted a cake for a fellow lawyer that they could display in the board room and that everyone would gasp with delight when they saw it....that was what I was asked for.
The cake was covered with ivory fondant and 'antiqued' with a coral pink pearl dust randomly placed so that there were different depths of colour all over the cake.
We then applied sugar pearls in random strings, with cameos, brooches, gold keys and other details being added. All were painted with 24kt gold and are completely edible.
We finished the cake with sugar flowers in a small posy to capture some of the Victorian spirit that was part of the design which would suit the Victorian building in which it was to be admired.
Miniature Leopard Cake
Hand painted with leopard print this cake was adorned with a 24kt gold painted bow and large edible gold beads.

Gold Cake
This was just a flashy dummy cake that we made, just because we can, not because anyone would actually want a cake entirely covered in 24k gold and diamonds...would they?
The pale pink and ivory roses offset the deep rich gold tones and the blingy diamonds just catch the light and make this very small cake a really eye catching one.

Turquoise and Gold
This cake shows off the elegance of deep rich colours matched with gold embellishments, topped with two love birds. All gold work is edible (except for the topper) and is painted with real 24kt gold.
For anyone looking for a striking wedding colour which marries so beautifully with whites, ivories and blacks this has a really opulent look for those grand wedding receptions.

Quick Peek

A quick peek into our new showroom. We have started to set up and to create new cake designs to tempt you with as well as working on some new flavours and textures to delight you.
You can't miss us on James Street South with our huge pink sign at the front (which is being put up as I write).

Just in case I've not said it often enough, our opening hours are 10.30am to 6pm daily, other times by appointment (evenings and Saturday mornings available). You may pop in with no prior arrangement, but if you would like a consultation and a tasting then it's usually best to let us know you're coming.
For those interested in seeing inside our preparation room, here are a couple of shots of when we were setting up.

The picture on the right shows just a fraction of the edible colours that we use and the picture on the left shows the number of spools of ribbon that we have to carry to cover everyone's colour scheme! Next time we'll show you inside the area where all the baking and preparation goes on.

Golden Wedding
Some cakes you just fall in love with for their simplicity. I had lots of fun creating this cake for a 50th Wedding Anniversary party. Of course the gold decoration is all edible, made of sugar with 24kt gold dust painted on. The brooch in the middle of the bow is made of sugar with Swarovski crystals for that sparkle. The cake was hand painted with pearl stripes (just barely visible but which give a damask look). On the top are paper roses in a creamy ivory.

Bonnie Gordon School 2010 Cake Show
I thought you'd like to see our other entry into the cake exhibition last weekend. This cake was designed and created by Louise Howling, our creative young designer.
It's a shame that you can't see all the way around this cake the hand painted koi carp painted on the cake were beautiful and the Chinese screen on the top of the cake was so intricate and pretty.
The gold branches were made from modelling chocolate and had fine branches in a very oriental stance.
The sugar phalanopsis orchids were so pretty.
Well done Louise!

Bird Cages

These bird cage cakes can be used as the top tier of a wedding cake or as a small celebration or wedding cake. Each cake is at least 8" high and serves approximately 20 slices. Exquisitely finished to match your colours and specifications.
Perfect in white for a summer garden wedding, or simply as something a little more unusual for a romantic feel, or how about ice blue or deep red and gold for a Christmas feel?
Whatever your taste we can find a bird cage just for you!

Fleur de Lys - Hamilton Golf and Country Club

This cake with a distinct French flair was for a bride who lived in France. Actually, after talking to her about it, she lived in the next street to me when I also lived in France, small world indeed!
The bride had supplied me with a fleur de lys cookie cutter to make the cake topper, but after trying it out a couple of times we realised that it was neither big enough or bold enough to carry off the finishing touches to this elegant design.
I made the topper from chocolate and hand sculpted it into it's form and made a chocolate plinth for it to sit on around which the roses were placed. The lace work on the top tier was brushed with a cream pearl finish which had a gold fleck. The draping on the middle tier was also brushed with the same finish. The gold fleur de lys were painted with 24k gold dust to match the fleur de lys on the top.
The roses were made of white chocolate and brushed with pearl dust also to finish the opulent look of this cake.

Golden Bubbles and Bows

Some cakes just turn out to be everyone's favourites. This is "one of those cakes". Usually we try not to make the same cake design over and over again....it's boring for us, but also we offer a custom design service so that each of our clients gets a cake that is unique to them.
We have made this design for weddings, anniversaries (especially Golden Wedding Anniversaries) and christenings.
These warm, rich colours are very appealing and soft making this a timeless favourite for any celebration.
